Watch: Israel shoots down two drones over Mediterranean Sea

Israeli Defence Forces ( IDF ) on Sunday said that two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were intercepted over the Mediterranean Sea. A missile ship successfully intercepted the drones, which were launched from the east in the northern sea area. Additionally, the Israeli Air Force intercepted another drone off the coast of Gush Dan, the IDF said.

The drones' interception comes amid rising tensions in the region, particularly as Israel continues its military operations against Hezbollah and Hamas in Lebanon. Israeli military activity has escalated significantly in recent days, targeting multiple locations linked to militant groups.

On Saturday, powerful explosions rocked Beirut’s southern suburbs, as Israel expanded its bombardment in Lebanon. For the first time, strikes were reported in a Palestinian refugee camp in the north, as both Hezbollah and Hamas fighters were targeted.

Thousands of people in Lebanon, including Palestinian refugees, have been fleeing the intensifying conflict. This follows earlier Israeli strikes that hit the northern Beddawi camp, killing a Hamas official, his wife, and their two young daughters. Additional strikes were reported in the eastern Bekaa Valley, killing another member of Hamas.

On Monday, Israel will observe the first anniversary of the Hamas attack on October 7, which triggered the Gaza conflict and has since escalated into a broader crisis affecting neighbouring Lebanon.

This attack led to the deaths of 1,205 individuals, primarily civilians, based on an AFP count that utilises official Israeli data, including hostages who were killed while in captivity.

In retaliation, Israel's military actions in Gaza have resulted in at least 41,825 fatalities, with a significant number being civilians, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-governed region. The UN has affirmed the accuracy of these figures.
