Two Swedish suspects detained after blasts near Israel embassy in Denmark

Danish police said on Wednesday they had detained three people of Swedish origin after two explosions were reported in the immediate vicinity of Israel's Copenhagen embassy.

Two were apprehended on a train at Copenhagen's main railway station while the third person was detained elsewhere in the Danish capital, police said on social media platform X.

More information is awaited over how these people of Swedish origin detained are connected to the blast.

The Israeli embassy in Copenhagen confirmed that there were no casualties and no building damages in the explosion that took place at 3.20 am (local time) .

"It is clear that the Israeli embassy is in the immediate vicinity and that is naturally also an angle that we look at," deputy assistant commissioner, Copenhagen was quoted as telling news agency AFP.

A section around the embassy was sealed off with Danish military personnel standing guard, while investigators in protective suits searched the area for evidence.

The explosions occurred amid rising tensions in the Middle East as Iran launched a significant missile attack on Israel.

Carolineskolen, a Jewish school near the embassy in Copenhagen, will remain closed on Wednesday due to its proximity to the incident, according to a spokesperson from Denmark’s Jewish community.

In neighboring Sweden, recent security incidents near Israel's embassy are also under investigation, with police probing possible gunfire in the area on Tuesday.

Earlier in January, Swedish police defused a "dangerous object" outside the Israeli embassy, though no injuries or major damage occurred. Swedish authorities have also thwarted several planned attacks linked to Iranian security services working through local criminal networks, a claim Iran has dismissed as "baseless".
