26-year-old Navjeet Singh, an Indian-origin Brampton truck driver, was arrested at Toronto's Pearson International Airport as he arrived in Canada in August. He was on the run since November last year after crash-killing a mother and daughter duo after he drove his semi through a stop sign.

A Canada-wide warrant was issued against him as he was not found after the accident. Police attempted to interview Singh in the hospital following the incident, but he was unable to provide his account of the events. After failing to report to investigators after he left the hospital, a Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest. The RCMP at the time believed he had left the country. But all this led to him out on bail -- triggering a massive reaction from Canadians on social media.

After his arrest in August, Singh was presented in court and the Manitoba court granted him bail. He was charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death and obstructing a police officer following the deadly crash that occurred in November of 2024 on a highway intersection near Altona, about 100 km south of Winnipeg.

At his hearing, the Crown attorney argued that Singh was a flight risk but judge Michael Clark granted bail on the conditions that he surrender his passport and driver’s licence, that he live at a specific Ontario address, have a daily curfew, report weekly to police and pay $7,500 if he breaks any of the conditions.

Singh is expected to appear in court again in December.

"Navjeet Singh killed 2 people. 35 yr old & her 8 yr old daughter. He blew through a stop sign.Their SUV flew over 150ft. It was an explosion. At the hospital, Singh said he’d give a statement later. He never showed & fled the country. He got caught a year later. HE GOT BAIL.Yes, you read that right. He dodged the police, left the country, got busted coming back on a flight from Ethiopia, they charged him, AND HE STILL GOT BAIL," one wrote.

"Canadians are sick to death of these reckless foreigners terrorizing our highways and taking innocent lives in our nation," another wrote.
