The Nobel Peace Prize in 2024 has been awarded to the Japanese organisation Nihon Hidankyo to honour all atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki , "for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again."

This grassroots movement, made up of atomic bomb survivors known as Hibakusha, is being recognised for its commitment to creating a world free of nuclear weapons.

The Nobel committee at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences made this announcement on Friday. A total of 286 candidates were nominated for the Nobel peace prize.

Hibakusha: Survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

In 1956, local Hibakusha associations, along with victims of nuclear weapons tests in the Pacific, established the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organisations. This name was later abbreviated in Japanese to Nihon Hidankyo, which grew to become the largest and most influential Hibakusha organisation in Japan.

They have been instrumental in fostering and strengthening global opposition to nuclear weapons by sharing their personal stories, developing educational campaigns based on their experiences, and issuing urgent warnings about the proliferation and use of nuclear arms.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said for nearly 80 years, no nuclear weapon has been used in warfare. The decision to award the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize to Nihon Hidankyo was firmly rooted in Alfred Nobel’s will. The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize embodies Alfred Nobel’s intent to recognize efforts that provide the greatest benefit to humanity, they added.
