NEW DELHI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Wednesday condemned the vice-chancellor ( VC ) of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Patiala , for allegedly entering the girls' hostel without prior notice and making inappropriate remarks about the students' attire. She called the incident "extremely shameful" and expressed strong disapproval of the VC's actions.

"It is extremely shameful that the Vice Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi Law University, Patiala, suddenly entered the rooms of the girl students without informing them and checked them, making indecent comments on their dress," Priyanka Gandhi said. She added that what the students had shared with the media was "extremely objectionable."

" Moral policing and the violation of the privacy of girls by misusing authority is unacceptable," Gandhi said, calling for action. She urged the Women's Commission to intervene, saying that strict measures should be taken against the VC.

The protesting students claim that the incident occurred on Sunday when the VC conducted an unannounced visit to the girls' hostel, reportedly to inspect the facilities. However, students allege that the VC entered the rooms without warning and made comments about their clothing.

The students alleged that the VC tried to justify his actions claiming he considered the female students as his "granddaughters".

The incident has sparked protests among students, who are demanding the VC’s resignation and the establishment of a student bar association. Authorities have since announced the closure of the university until further notice amid the ongoing unrest.

Ishita Sharma, the PRO at RGNUL, said that the university had formed a committee consisting of nine members to tackle and address the concerns raised by the students.
