'No one should be spared': BRICS set to call out Pahalgam terror act, echo India's stand against terrorism

The upcoming BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro is poised to deliver a strong and unified condemnation of the Pahalgam terror attack , in a move that aligns closely with India's longstanding demand for a firm global stance against terrorism.

The leaders' declaration, set to be unveiled during the summit on July 6 and 7, will include robust language denouncing the "dastardly" attack and call for coordinated international action to confront terrorism head-on, PTI reported.

"The formulations in the declaration in reference to terrorism are going to be to our satisfaction," said Dammu Ravi, secretary (economic relations) in the ministry of external affairs, during a press briefing on Monday.

India's role in shaping the agenda

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the BRICS summit in Brazil, as part of a wider tour that includes visits to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, and Namibia from July 2 to 9. India is also set to assume the BRICS chairmanship next year.

Ravi emphasised that the condemnation of the Pahalgam attack by the BRICS grouping reflects a shared understanding among member nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and the recently inducted members like Egypt and UAE—of the need for collective and uncompromising action against terrorism.

Declaration to reflect 'no-nonsense' approach to terrorism

"There is also a broader understanding on how to deal with this menace of terrorism and no one should be spared," Ravi asserted, highlighting that the declaration's wording had been "very well captured" and would meet India's expectations.

The Pahalgam terror attack, which has drawn sharp outrage, is expected to be featured prominently in the summit document. According to Ravi, all BRICS members have expressed sympathy, solidarity, and support to India, without any divergence or ambiguity.
