NEW DELHI: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday declared that the 2024 monsoon season witnessed 7.6 per cent more rainfall than normal. Rajasthan, Gujarat, west Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh were the regions that received excess rainfall , according to the IMD data.
Additionally, the weather agency announced that several regions in central, southern peninsular which includes five meteorological subdivisions-Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Kerala, south interior Karnataka, and northeast India are expected to receive above normal rainfall from October to December.
The southern peninsular region is expected to receive more than 112 per cent of the long-period average of 334.13 mm of rainfall.
However, most parts of northwest India, some regions of northeast India, and the southernmost parts of the country are expected to receive normal to below normal rainfall.
For the month of October, the weather department predicted above-normal rainfall for the country, with more than 115 per cent of the long-period average of 75.4 mm.
"The spatial distribution suggests above-normal rainfall in many parts of the country during October. However, some areas in northeast and northwest India, as well as a few pockets in the southern peninsula, are likely to experience normal to below normal rainfall," the IMD said.
It also forecasted that most parts of the country will likely experience above-normal maximum temperatures in October, with the exception of certain areas in central India and the adjoining southern peninsula.
