NEW DELHI: The Palestinian ambassador to India, Adnan Abu Al-Haija, urged India on Sunday to mediate the current ongoing crisis between Palestine and Israel . The ambassador called on India to facilitate a ceasefire, organize an international conference, and back the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
"We are always looking for a friend like India to play a mediator role. And I know India is a peaceful country," Al-Haija said.
"So we are calling on them to play that role especially if they (India) are friends of both (countries) to make a ceasefire, to call for an international conference, to lead to the independence of the state of Palestine and the land of 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital," he added.
New Delhi has reiterated its consistent stance in favor of peace since the outbreak of the conflict .
According to the United Nations, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is "beyond catastrophic," with over 1 million Palestinians not receiving food rations in August and a 35% decrease in people receiving daily cooked meals. On Friday morning, health workers in the southern Gaza Strip resumed vaccinating children against polio for the second phase of a large-scale immunization campaign.
The conflict began after Hamas launched a wide-scale attack into Israel on October 7, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and the abduction of around 250 individuals. In response, Israel's campaign has claimed the lives of more than 40,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and fighters in its casualty count.
