NEW DELHI: The Cabinet on Monday took several steps to bolster the agriculture sector, approving a total of around Rs 14,000 crore for various initiatives aimed at enhancing farmers' welfare.
In a series of decisions, the government sanctioned seven major projects focusing on digital agriculture, food security, education, and sustainable farming.
One of the key approvals is for the Digital Agriculture Mission , which will receive an allocation of Rs 2,817 crore. This mission is expected to modernise the agriculture sector by leveraging technology to improve efficiency and productivity.
The Cabinet also approved a Rs 3,979 crore proposal for Crop Science for Food and Nutritional Security. The initiative aims to enhance research and development in crop science, ensuring better food availability and nutrition for the population.
Further, Rs 2,291 crore has been allocated for the Strengthening of Agri Education , Management, and Social Sciences. This funding will support the development of agricultural education and management programs across the country.
The Cabinet has also earmarked Rs 1,702 crore for Sustainable Livestock Health and Production, focusing on improving the health and productivity of livestock, a vital component of the rural economy.
For the sustainable development of horticulture, the Cabinet has approved Rs 860 crore. This initiative will aim to increase the production and quality of horticultural crops, contributing to the overall growth of the agriculture sector.
Additionally, Rs 1,202 crore has been approved for strengthening Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), which play a crucial role in transferring agricultural technologies to farmers. Another Rs 1,115 crore has been sanctioned for natural resource management , emphasizing the sustainable use of resources for agricultural activities.
