CUTTACK: An attempt by two sewage workers to rescue a colleague, who had lost consciousness after entering an under-construction septic tank, turned tragic with all three dying of asphyxiation in Odisha 's Cuttack district.

The deceased were identified as Abu Taheer Ali (36), Almin Sheikh (27) and Krishna Kishore Sarkar (38), all from Nadia district.

Police said the incident occurred at 10.45am on Friday, when one of the workers entered the 15-ft deep septic tank at an apartment in Trishulia city to dismantle the centring support. After a few minutes, he started struggling to breathe and lost consciousness.

Two other workers went into the tank to rescue him, but all three died of suffocation, police said.

A witness, Sumanta Behera, said locals informed fire services and police personnel. The workers were pulled out after 20 minutes and taken to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.

"The septic tank had a very narrow opening. We entered by breaking the walls with a drill machine and brought them out, but they could not be saved," said city fire officer Sanjib Behera.

Additional DCP Anil Mishra said a case of unnatural death had been registered and an investigation had been initiated.
