KOLKATA: In the brutal rape-murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, 210 lawyers ' appearance was recorded by the Supreme Court in the last hearing on Sept 9.

According to an advocate appearing in one of the matters, who wishes to remain anonymous as he will be appearing in the hearing on Tuesday, the large number of lawyer appearances recorded in this case was not one of its kind. "Previously, too, there have been cases where the number of lawyers appearing had exceeded 100," the advocate said.

Senior advocate Milon Mukherjee, who is scheduled to appear in the Supreme Court on Sept 24 for the SSC case, said this case had 33 matters, which means there will be at least two lawyers - a senior and a junior - appearing for each matter. Thus, roughly 100 lawyers would be present for the hearing. "Normally, we don't see these many lawyers appearing in a matter but in cases where individual cases are turned into PILs, the magnitude increases," Mukherjee said.

Usually in a rape-murder case, lawyers representing the victims, accused, CBI and the state appear. But since this case has partaken in other matters and there seems to be numerous intervenors, the number of lawyers appearing has also increased, criminal lawyer Jayanta Narayan Chatterjee said.

The case has engaged an audience across the country, specifically in Bengal, who are hanging on to the orders of the bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. The Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognisance of the case, amalgamating it with the larger worry of doctors across the country over infrastructural and security woes in medical colleges and hospitals.

of Sept 9, a total of 210 lawyers' appearances have been recorded as the respondents, seven for petitioners and seven are applicants in person. On the first day of hearing of the matter, CJI Chandrachud had acknowledged the wide range of applications that have been filed in the case and categorised the hearing. In fact, on Sept 9, the apex court heard the matters in categories like CISF accommodation issue, CBI probe into the RG Kar incident, junior doctors' protest and infrastructure of medical colleges and hospitals.
