Send Push
In a surprising twist, eight-time NBA All-Star Damian Lillard has come to the defense of quarterback Justin Fields , who faced criticism during his time with the Chicago Bears. Lillard, watching the Raiders' Week 2 game, hinted that offensive coordinator Luke Getsy—who also coached Fields in Chicago—might be the true obstacle to Fields' success. With Raiders QB Gardner Minshew struggling, Lillard's insights could expose deeper issues for the Raiders if Getsy is indeed at fault.

Damian Lillard drops bombshell on Raiders OC. Is he the real villain behind Justin Fields' struggles?

Quarterback Justin Fields struggled to find his rhythm with the Chicago Bears, drawing criticism from fans for failing to secure a winning record. However, support is coming from an unexpected source—eight-time NBA All-Star Damian Lillard. Lillard, who was watching the Las Vegas Raiders' Week 2 clash with the Baltimore Ravens , seemed to point the finger at Raiders offensive coordinator Luke Getsy . Getsy, who also served as Fields' offensive coordinator with the Bears, is being blamed by Lillard for stifling Fields' growth.

With roughly 10 minutes left in Sunday's game against the Ravens, Raiders starting quarterback Gardner Minshew had managed only 206 passing yards and an interception, while the team's sole touchdown came from a rush by running back Alexander Mattison. Damian Lillard weighed in, suggesting that Justin Fields might not have been the primary issue with the Bears' offense after all—pointing to Getsy as a significant factor. If Lillard's assessment is correct, it could spell even bigger trouble for the Raiders.

Justin Fields is set to make his second start of the season in Week 2 against the Broncos

Justin Fields took the field for his first start of the season in Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons, stepping in due to Russell Wilson's recurring calf injury. Although fans were hoping to see Wilson back in action for Week 2 against his former team, the Denver Broncos, it appears that won’t be the case.

Wilson's calf injury continues to limit his playing time this season, leading to Justin Fields making his second consecutive start. In his previous outing, Fields completed 17 of 23 passes for 156 yards. Although he didn’t manage to throw a touchdown pass, the Pittsburgh Steelers secured an 18-10 victory to kick off the season. The positive takeaway was that Fields did not turn the ball over.

If Fields can maintain this level of performance and keep the Steelers winning, he could pose a serious challenge to Wilson for the starting role. Fields, who was drafted 11th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft following an impressive collegiate career with the Ohio State Buckeyes, has the potential to become a strong contender.
