Anant Chaturdashi 2024: Date, Time, Story, Puja Rituals and Significance

Anant Chaturdashi has its great religious and spiritual significance in Hindu religion. Anant Chaturdashi is purely dedicated to Lord Vishnu. On this auspicious day, devotees offer prayers to Lord Vishnu. This day is considered as the most sacred day to perform all the puja rituals associated with Lord Vishnu. Anant Chaturdashi is going to be celebrated on Chaturdashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada i.e., on September 17, 2024.

On the day of Anant Chaturdashi, Ganpati Visarjan also takes place all over India with great grandeur. Devotees take out the processions in which they take Lord Ganpati to immerse him in the pond, sea and river after worshipping him for 10 consecutive days. They say goodbye to the Lord and request him to come back again next year to bless the devotees.

Anant Chaturdashi 2024: Story
According to the Scriptures, there was a Brahmin whose name was Sumant and had a daughter named Sushila. She was married with sage Kaundinya. When Sage Kaundinya took Sushila with him to his home, the sage went to perform evening prayers near the bank of the river. Meanwhile, Sushila saw that a lot of women were also worshipping and offering prayers. She asked the women that to whom they are offering prayers. Lady told her about the importance of worshipping Lord Anant and observing a fast for the day. Sushila also wished to observe the fast of Anant Chaturdashi and tied a sacred thread on her arm which had 14 knots.

Kaundinya asked Sushila about the thread, which was tied on her arm. She told him about worshipping Lord Anant. He got angry and pulled the sacred thread and put it into the fire. His act of dishonoring Lord Anant and then he started losing all his wealth. Later sage realized his mistake and regretted his actions. He wanted to rectify his mis deeds so he decided to go through a strict penance till the time Lord Ananta appears in front of him. In spite of doing all the efforts and facing enormous hardships, Kaundinya was not able to see the deity.

When he realized that all his efforts are going in vain, he decided to commit suicide. But when he was hanging himself, suddenly he was saved by Lord Vishnu and he appeared in front of Kaundinya and advised him to observe a 14-year long vow to worship Lord Anant and keep a fast of Anant Chaturdashi to get his lost wealth. Kaundinya promised and started observing an Anant Chaturdashi fast for 14 consecutive years with utmost sincerity. It is believed that devotees who observe fast and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu on Anant Chaturdashi, get blessed with the desired wish fulfilment.

Anant Chaturdashi 2024: Significance
Anant Chaturdashi holds a great religious significance among Hindu. This day is celebrated as a festival in India. Anant Chaturdashi is mainly celebrated in Maharashtra and Goa.
On this propitious day, people offer prayers to Lord Vishnu. As the name suggests Anant, Lord Vishnu is known as Anant or endless so it is purely dedicated to honor Shree Hari. According tot the Hindu Scriptures, it is believed that Lord Vishnu in the form of Ananta sleeps on the serpent whose name is Ananta. The serpent narrated the story to a Brahmin named Sumant.

Worshipping Serpent Ananta and Lord Vishnu
Devotees make the best use of this day by worshipping Lord Vishnu with immense devotion and dedication. It is also believed that the people who are suffering from Sarpa Dosha, must worship the serpent Anant on this day along with Lord Vishhu to get rid of the Kaal Sarpa Dosha. You can organise a Kaal Sarpa Dosha Puja, pray to the serpent God to remove all the past sins and get relieved from that.

Anant Chaturdashi 2024: Rituals
1. Devotees get up early in the morning and take a holy bath before starting puja rituals.
2. Take wooden plank and cover it with yellow cloth and mark fourteen tilaks (small vertical strips) with roli on the cloth.
3. Take 14 sweet (Malpua), fourteen puri and kheer and place it on each mark.
4. Prepare Panchamrit that symbolizes 'Ocean Of Milk' (Ksheersagar) and offer it to Lord Anant.
5. A sacred thread that has 14 knots represents Lord Anant should be swirled in the Panchamrit for five times.
6. Take a sankalp of observing fast and colour the sacred thread with turmeric and kumkum.
7. This sacred thread is known as Ananta Sutra. Tie this thread on the arm (right arm of the men and left arm of the women). Keep this thread for 14 days and then remove it.
