Recently, a chain of posts and videos have been going viral on social media, claiming that Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah , Namibia 's first female president, had ordered the deportation of over 500 Americans. The posts also claimed that the Ndaitwah made a statement saying, "If Africans need visas to enter the USA, then Americans must also need visas to enter Namibia"
The posts have sparked a large controversy on social media, with many claiming it as a correct response to Trump's deportation of illegals and others questioning if many Americans went to the South African country in the first place.
Has Namibia really deported over 500 Americans?
This news is completely false. Ndaitwah herself called the allegations fake and urged the people to be vigilant of fake social media reports. On Wednesday, the Presidency released a press release which said that it had noted with concern the circulation of social media posts alleging that the President had ordered the deportation of American nationals on the grounds of visa reciprocity.
“These posts feature fabricated quotes and images containing misinformation and disinformation intended to tarnish the image of the president, the Namibian government and to create potential diplomatic embarrassment,” it read.
The press release also clarified that no such order of deportation has been issued and no mass deportation is underway. “Namibia is committed to maintaining strong diplomatic and bilateral relations with the United States, and all immigration matters are handled through established legal and diplomatic channels. Namibia continues to uphold international norms, including visa and immigration policies, based on mutual respect and reciprocity," the presidency added.
Additionally, the public, media houses and digital content creators were urged to use verified information from official government sources before reporting or sharing it further.
As a part of Trump's reciprocal tariffs, Namibia has faced 21% tariffs on its imports whereas Namibia itself levies 42% tariffs on US imports. After the imposition, Namibia did call the United States to follow the international trade rules but no such steps as mass deportation have been initiated.
