Dumka: Local residents might demand a separate state if the current state govt continues neglecting Santhal Pargana, similar to how Jharkhand was formed from Bihar, Godda BJP MP Nishikant Dubey stated while addressing a gathering at Dumka railway station during the inaugural run of the Bhagalpur-Howrah Vande Bharat Express on Sunday, which is the second such train along the newly constructed line between Bhagalpur and Howrah.

Dubey emphasized that the Narendra Modi govt has focused on the development of Santhal Pargana since coming to power, with the introduction of Vande Bharat trains connecting Bhagalpur and Howrah, and Deoghar and Varanasi, serving as examples of the PM’s commitment towards the region's progress. Although Dubey refrained from directly criticizing the ruling JMM-Congress alliance, he highlighted the ongoing discrimination against the region and suggested that the demand for a separate Jharkhand state arose due to similar neglect by previous govts in undivided Bihar.

“Similar situation prevails in Jharkhand as Santhal Pargana continues to be neglected in terms of lack of development works as compared to other regions. Therefore, it won’t be surprising if local people start raising the points against the same,” Dubey stated, implying the potential separation of Santhal Pargana as a separate state from Jharkhand.

However, he stressed the need for a collaborative effort between the central and state govts, transcending party lines, to ensure rapid development in the region. Dumka MP Nalin Soren, a JMM leader, also shared the stage with Dubey during the event, said the two Vande Bharat trains introduced on Sunday by PM Modi would boost religious tourism in the respective states. Nalin Soren, who was also present at the event, said the local population, afflicted by poverty, might not be able to afford the fare. He called for a reconsideration of the train's fare to make it more accessible to a larger number of people.
