Mangaluru: In a remarkable act of love and resilience, a 64-year-old grandmother stepped forward as the kidney donor for her nine-year-old grandson battling a chronic renal condition, granting the little boy a new lease of life as he underwent a successful transplant at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, Deralakatte.

The grandmother donor was discharged from hospital four days after the surgery, which was conducted on Oct 3, while the child was discharged on Oct 14.

The child required regular interventions and had to battle multiple challenges before he could embark on the road to recovery – thanks to timely medical intervention and a brave donor whose kidney, fortunately, matched the requirement.

The medical team was happy with the boy's recovery and emphasised the critical importance of organ donation in saving lives.

The intricate procedure was conducted by a team of medics from the Yenepoya Institute of Nephro-Urology that included Dr Mujeeburahiman M, head of the department, Dr Altaf Khan, Dr Nischith D'Souza, and Dr Sharath D V, along with vascular surgeon Dr Ganesh Kamath.
