MANGALURU: Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan M.P. said that Tannir Bhavi Beach, selected as a Blue Flag Beach, must be consistently maintained to meet the high standards required by the Blue Flag certification.

Speaking at a meeting on beach development and maintenance tender on Monday, he noted that the certification is seasonal and depends on adherence to strict environmental and operational guidelines. There could be changes in maintenance agencies if standards are not met.

The Deputy Commissioner mentioned that about 90% of the beach’s development work is complete, with key eco-friendly initiatives like waste management and solar installations already in place.

He also pointed out the need to attract more tourists and reassured bidders that entry hours, currently limited to 6.30 pm at the Blue Flag Beach, may be reviewed based on visitor demand. Improvements in parking, road connectivity, and lighting were also requested by visitors, to which the DC committed attention.

In response to concerns about tanker trucks causing disruption by parking on nearby roads, the DC said that NMPA has proposed a truck terminal, which will prohibit roadside parking once implemented.

Tourism Department Consultant Chethan said that a tender process is underway for a 10-year beach maintenance contract, with the deadline set for Nov 8. With 12.2 lakh visitors in 2023 and peak season footfall of around 5,010 daily, he said that an acre has been reserved for parking.

Also, the approved bridge project connecting Sultan Battery to Bengre will improve beach accessibility, he said. Deputy Director of Tourism, Manikya, was present at the meeting.
