Guwahati: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that the biometrics of over nine lakh individuals, which were frozen during the updating process of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state since 2019, have been unlocked by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) paving the way for the issuance of Aadhaar cards to them.

Taking to X, Sarma said so far five lakh Aadhaar cards have been generated and on September 23, UIDAI will dispatch 12,000 to 13,000 of these to Tinsukia on a pilot basis.

The only condition that these new applicants are required to fulfil is submission of their NRC application receipt number (ARN) except for those residing in tea garden areas.

The Registrar General of India (RGI) had earlier last month asked UIDAI to issue Aadhaar cards to 9,35,682 residents of the state whose biometrics were mistakenly frozen in 2019 when the NRC was being updated. In the absence of Aadhar cards, these people have since been deprived of all govt benefits, scholarships and welfare initiatives.
