Aizawl: New Delhi-based Chin Refugee Committee has extended its deepest gratitude to the central govt for its humanitarian efforts in providing refuge to asylum seekers and refugees, despite not being a signatory to the Refugee Convention (1951).
In a statement, the committee said tens of thousands of Myanmar citizens, including those in New Delhi, Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland, have sought refuge in India following the military coup in Myanmar on Feb 1, 2021.
The statement also called upon Myanmar nationals taking shelter in India to respect and abide by Indian laws as a gesture of gratitude to their host country.
The committee reaffirmed its strong stance against the use and trafficking of drugs in any form and urged members of the Chin community and other Myanmar citizens in India to remain vigilant, responsible, and supportive of efforts to maintain a drug-free environment.
The committee emphasised the importance of complying with Indian laws, as well as adhering to the guidelines established by central and state govts, and civil society organisations.
The committee also encouraged fostering harmonious relations with local communities, stating, "As members of Myanmar society, we encourage every member of our community to uphold these principles and share this important message with all Myanmar citizens taking refuge in India."
Mizoram currently hosts over 33,000 Myanmar refugees, with more than 7,000 seeking shelter in New Delhi.
