New Delhi: A couple returning from a family wedding in northeast Delhi's Karawal Nagar were killed after their motorcycle was hit by an unidentified vehicle in north Delhi's Kashmere Gate area late Monday night. No arrests have been made yet and police are yet to identify the vehicle and its driver, who fled the scene.
The deceased, Dharmender (37) and his wife Renu (35), originally from Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior, were living in south Delhi's Sangam Vihar. They are survived by three young children.
Cops were alerted about the accident by a PCR call at Kashmere Gate police station around 11.46pm Monday.
"Police officers rushed to the spot and found the couple lying unresponsive beside their damaged motorcycle and a helmet. Preliminary findings suggest it was a high-impact collision. The exact cause is still under investigation," said a senior officer.
"The details of the offending vehicle could not be ascertained. The bodies were preserved in Sabzi Mandi mortuary for post-mortem," the officer added.
Based on initial probe, a case was registered under sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 106 (death due to negligence) of BNS at Kashmere Gate police station. Police said they are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify the vehicle and further investigation is underway.
The couple belonged to a middle-class family. Dharmender worked in a private firm while Renu was a homemaker. Their eldest child, aged 17, is studying in Class 12 while the other two are aged 14 and four.
