CHENNAI: SRMC all-woman police registered a case against a software engineer, his parents, and three others for harassing his dentist wife and cheating her of her gold and silver ornaments.

Kiruthika (named changed) married Sriram on June 1, 2023, and lived in her in-laws’ house in Kottivakkam. Before their marriage, Sriram’s family had demanded a luxury car and 73 sovereigns of gold jewellery.

In her complaint, the 29-year-old woman narrated her harrowing experience in her in-laws’ house.

“Sriram wanted her to pay him Rs 50 lakh to start his own business. He chided her and her family for buying the luxury car in her name. He asked her to transfer the ownership of the car to him,” Kiruthika alleged in her complaint.

As her in-laws insisted, she worked in the kitchen preparing food for their family. They had asked her to stop practising as a dentist, she stated in her complaint.

Kiruthika’s uncle Gnanavelan said, “Following the separation in July last year, my niece underwent a trauma. She was under depression. She was admitted to a hospital in Thousand Lights.” After she regained her strength, she lodged the complaint on Aug 30, he added.

Kiruthika and her family members sought police to retrieve her belongings, including gold and silver jewellery, from her husband and in-laws.

SRMC all-woman police registered a case under sections 498(A) (dowry harassment), 406 (cheating), 294(b) (abusing) of IPC and sections 4 and 5 of Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. Police named Sriram, his parents Ravichandran and Jeyanthi and three others identified as Sridhar, Murali and Mythili in the case. They were yet to be arrested.
