Keonjhar: The Santhal tribal community of Kendujoda village in Keonjhar's Saharapada block celebrated their traditional Serpasale festival on Saturday with vibrant cultural displays, song and dance and various competitions.
Winners of the competitions were awarded goats, with more than 20 goats distributed as prizes. The evening culminated in a grand community feast prepared with the meat of the goats won.
A unique highlight of the festival was the transformation of Kendujoda into a "colourful village," with residents painting their mud-walled homes in bright colours and intricate murals. The houses featured depictions of flowers, birds, streams, trains, and scenes of Santhal life.
"Serpasale means ‘get together'," said Binod Nayak, a tribal leader and social activist. "In preparation, the villagers repair and paint their homes. Women take the lead in decorating walls with traditional clay and modern chemical paints," he added.
According to local Balaram Majhi, the festival venue changes every year, but the spirit of unity remains strong as villagers come together to celebrate. "Preparations begin months in advance with youths practising dance, drama, and sports," added Majhi.
Kendujoda is home to over 200 members of the Santhal community living in around 40 families. Despite exposure to modern life, the villagers continue to embrace their traditional lifestyle — reflected in their costumes, language, music, and customs.
