Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing star diver faced a penalty on Friday for using inappropriate language during a Singapore Grand Prix press conference, as ruled by the FIA. The 26-year old is now required to perform a task of public interest according to an FIA stewards’ panel, after the Dutchman used foul language, specifically the 'F-word', during Thursday's live broadcast of the drivers’ press conference.Verstappen was called to appear before the stewards following Friday’s first practice session in Singapore, where the audio recording was examined. The stewards concluded that Verstappen had used language typically regarded as ‘vulgar', 'inappropriate’ or potentially ‘offensive’ and not fit for broadcast as per their ruling. The stewards acknowledged that the language was not aimed at any individual or group, the driver clarified that the term is common in conversation as he learned it, given that English is not his first language as per the the statement.Although the stewards recognize this may be accurate, they emphasized the importance of role models being cautious with their words in public settings, especially when not facing any specific pressure. With all being put to place, Verstappen has already issued an apology for his actions. The penalty was imposed just one day after drivers were urged to reduce their use of offensive language on team radio during races. In an interview with Autosport.com, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem stated that motorsport is not “rap music” and emphasized that drivers need to be cautious with their words, particularly since children could be watching.Top drivers like Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc pushed back against Ben Sulayem’s comments, arguing that during intense moments in a race, emotions run high, and any inappropriate language could easily be edited out of the broadcast if necessary.Seven-time world champion and of the greats, Lewis Hamilton also disagreed with Ben Sulayem’s analogy to rap music.
