Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) Vice President Omar Abdullah was today sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir after the party secured. After the ceremony, videos of Omar Abdullah's oath-taking ceremony in 2009 and 2024 are going viral on social media, highlighting the change of words after the Abrogation of Article 370 in the state.Omar Abdullah has become first chief minister of the Union Territory after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. He is also the first CM of Jammu and Kashmir after the erstwhile state was bifurcated into Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh Union Territories. He previously served as the chief minister between 2009 and 2014 and when he took oath 15 years back, things in the state were different as Article 370 which gives it special status was still in place."I, Omar Abdullah, swear in the name of god that....to the constitution of state as by law established," he can be heard saying in the first half of the video which has a clip from 2009. The second half of the video is from his oath taking ceremony from today where he says, "I, Omar Abdullah, swear in the name of god that....to the constitution of India as by law establish..."
Why This Shift? Because, Jammu and Kashmir was administered by India as a state from 17 November 1952 to 31 October 2019, and Article 370 conferred on it the power to have a separate constitution, a state flag, and autonomy of internal administration. On 5 August 2019, the Government of India issued a Presidential Order superseding the 1954 order, and making all the provisions of the Indian constitution applicable to Jammu and Kashmir. The order was based on the resolution passed in both houses of India's parliament with two-thirds majority. IBesides, the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 was passed by the Parliament, enacting the division of the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories to be called Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Union Territory of Ladakh. JKNC Wins Jammu and Kashmir ElectionsThe National Conference (NC) emerged as the single largest party in Jammu and Kashmir when votes were counted on October 8. The party won 42 seats in the 90-member Assembly of the union territory, while the Bharatiya Janata Party retained its stronghold Jammu by winning 29 seats. However, the NC ally Congress’ performance was dismal and it only won six seats, five from the Kashmir valley and only one from the Jammu province. It had fielded candidates from 32 seats as part of a seat-sharing arrangement with the NC.
