Avid cruisers are well aware that most cruise lines often come out with their best fares when itineraries first go on sale.

These prices then steadily increase as the ships sell out, which is more evident among luxury cruises including mainstream and new ships.

Certain seasons, however, have proved to be more value for money with the shoulder season being particularly beneficial.

"Shoulder season, particularly September and October, is an excellent time to go on holiday," said Will Sarson, spokesperson at .

He added the reasons why this is the optimal time to book a cruise and explained that: "With fewer crowds, mild but comfortable temperatures, and beautiful Autumn scenery, it's one of the best times of the year to go abroad.

"A river cruise during the Autumn season promises breathtaking landscapes in stunning seasonal hues, and the reduced tourism population allows you to explore destinations freely and thoroughly without congestion.

"Many believe booking a last-minute trip, whether it's a flight, hotel, or cruise purchase, is the way to secure the best deal; however, this isn't always the case, and in fact, those who book their holiday in advance usually are the most well-off."

Sarson added that when it comes to river cruises, the earlier the better when it comes to bookings.

He explained: "Reserving your spot as far in advance as possible will ensure you secure the best cabin."

Booking a cruise very much differs from booking a regular holiday as most cruises offer a package experience which means the guesswork when it comes to finding accommodation, meals, and entertainment are often taken out of the equation.

Despite it being more convenient for bookings, allowing yourself plenty of time to arrange all the other necessary requirements needed for a cruise holiday is always better well ahead of the time.

"Booking a holiday in advance also allows plenty of time to save money, make necessary arrangements, and remove any pre-holiday stress," added Sarson.

"Plus, there's no better feeling than knowing you're going on holiday, so booking in advance gives you something to look forward to."
