A warning has been issued to the millions of households who have a garage this autumn and winter as temperatures plunge into the single digits.
According to specialist garage firms, UK garages are especially susceptible to mould because they are poorly insulated and ventilated, despite our typically cold and wet winters, which can lead to dangerous consequences.
Alastair Mayne, CEO at Garolla, said UK garages end up plagued with rotting beams, corroded metal and dangerous mould spores that can trigger asthma and allergies.
He warned: "If left untreated, mould in your garage can cause serious property damage and potential health issues over time.
"Mould spores pose a serious risk to respiratory health, especially for those with allergies or asthma, and makes entering the garage unsafe.
"If your garage has wooden beams or doors, these can rot away or become infested with insects. If your garage has metal elements, condensation can contribute to corrosion. Both of which are expensive."
Many garages, particularly older models, are made from uninsulated metal, which can lead to major temperature fluctuations and eventually damp.
According to Garolla, adding insulation to your garage walls, ceiling, and doors can help to keep the inside temperature more stable.
This will reduce the chances of warm, moist air hitting cold surfaces, and forming condensation. You can do this easily by buying foam board or insulation roll from your local home improvement store.
They added that if your garage has windows, it's important to open them regularly, or alternatively, fit air bricks or trickle vents to keep the air flowing. It could even be worth opening the garage door for an hour or two occasionally when you are home and able to keep an eye on it. This will stop moisture from settling on walls and surfaces.
Finally, Garolla urges people not to leave items on the floor, adding: "Another idea to avoid damp is to store your garage belongings on shelves rather than directly on the floor. This can prevent them from coming into contact with ground moisture, and improves air circulation around your items, helping them to stay dry."
