Strawberries are one of the household staples in the fruit bowl. There are a variety of ways to prepare them, whether that is for a light snack, a smoothie, or as a made-up dessert. But there is one drawback: they spoil rather quickly.
There are, however, ways to preserve the taste of this fruit for longer. Most people commonly give their freshly bought strawberries a rinse before either eating them or putting them in the fridge, and the job is done. However, dipping them in a liquid present in most kitchen cupboards will ensure you'll be able to enjoy days after you bought them.
A fairly easy but effective way to keep strawberries flavourful is to soak them in a vinegar solution and dry them in a salad spinner, according to The Kitchn, which gave the method a 9.5/10 rating.
The food website read: "You dunk strawberries in a water bath made with 1 part white vinegar and 3 parts water, drain them, then dry them as thoroughly as possible.
"Food52 suggested drying them in a salad spinner lined with paper towels for added insurance that they would get dry, so that's exactly what I did. Once dried, you transfer the strawberries into a paper towel-lined container, loosely place the lid on (do not seal it), and pop them in the fridge."
Strawberries tend to go off quite quickly, and the benefit of this method is that they will still look as fresh as when you first bought them by the end of the week, ensuring a long-lasting, sweet taste.
Whilst it does take some effort, depending on how many strawberries you pick out, it helps cut down on food waste.
One key thing to remember is that moisture is the biggest concern when it comes to preserving food. You want to make sure the strawberries are completely dry before storing them in the fridge, regardless of which method you choose.
