Prince William and Princess Kate's secret names they used for each other while dating

As the future King of England, anonymity is not often feasible.

But when Prince William attended university, a fake pseudonym was created to help the Royal have a somewhat normal time during his studies.

William used a fake name during his time at St Andrews in Scotland which helped him avoid the attention of the media and to experience uni life as a somewhat normal person.

According to Robert Jobson in his new book, Catherine, The Princess of Wales, William went by the name of Steve around his friends.

These friends were a close circle of people he knew well and could rely on.

Steve wasn't the only name he used for himself though, as he had enrolled on his course under 'William Wales' but to his friends, he was simply Steve.

This allowed the Prince of Wales a level of normality during his younger days with a media deal also being struck with the Palace agreeing to give him privacy during his time at St Andrews.

This was made possible after William consented to a few photos and a small interaction with the media on his first day at university back in September 2001.

It was important for William to avoid people who wanted to be around him purely because of his background.

"Among friends, he decided to use the pseudonym 'Steve' in a bizarre attempt to stay under the radar," wrote Jobson.

He further explained how William had said: "People who try to take advantage of me and get a piece of me, I spot it quickly and soon go off them. I'm not stupid.'

Steve and William Wales were not the only unusual names he adopted in those days.

As Wiliam and Kate's relationship blossomed, the lovebirds went on a few trips together.

"For weekends and holidays, he'd often whisk Catherine off to Highgrove or Sandringham or to a cottage on the Balmoral Estate," explained Jobson.

"Occasionally they checked into hotels, using the names Mr and Mrs Smith - which doubtless fooled no one."

In 2007 when the couple enjoyed another romantic break in the Seychelles both used fake names when they checked into their hotel as Martin and Rosemary Middleton, wrote journalist Marcia Moody in her Princess biography.

When the couple tied the knot in 2011, they reportedly used the names Danny Collins and Daphne Clark in their aides' phone contact lists and in reference to their new titles of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, reported the Daily Star.
