Upon its release, Netflix's high-octane blockbuster 'Red Notice' made waves as the streaming giant's priciest endeavour yet, ringing in at a colossal $200 million. It soared to become one of Netflix's most ambitious financial ventures and was heralded as the platform's most expensive movie ever made for some time.
In 2021, audiences were treated to the star-studded American action comedy featuring megastars Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot. The film's premiere on Netflix reportedly dominated viewership, being touted as the most-streamed film over its debut weekend.
One glowing review said: "This is just a great movie of fun, twists, and turns to the end. If you like heist movies, this is the one. The Rock is awesome, and the acting in this movie is super."
However, not everyone was charmed by it. A less impressed spectator said: "Exactly what I was expecting, completely forgettable and a relatively fun watch, albeit I lost interest about 45 minutes in."
Such underwhelmed reactions have contributed to 'Red Notice' garnering a rather unflattering score of just 37 percent on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, reports the Mirror US.
'Red Notice' kicks off with an international alert - a Red Notice, which is the most serious global call to capture the planet's most elusive criminals. Dwayne Johnson, taking a break from the wrestling ring, portrays John Hartley who chases the culprits across the globe.
He finds himself entangled in an audacious robbery and forms an unlikely alliance with Nolan Booth, touted as the greatest art thief the world has seen.
The dynamic duo of Johnson and Reynolds team up in a thrilling chase to apprehend the world's most elusive art thief, The Bishop, portrayed by 'Wonder Woman' star Gal Gadot. Their adventure takes them across varied locales, from glamorous dance floors to the confines of a prison.
One viewer said: "One of the best action movies I've ever seen." They added: "Movie was very well written, and the action and humor were amazing. The plot twist in the end kind of dwindled the rating a little bit, but in the end they made up for it."
Further acclaim came from another fan who said: "Netflix's biggest investment ever in a film absolutely pays off."
Likewise, another recommended: "I can highly recommend the movie for everyone who loves action. Please give us more of these totally great movies with Ryan and the Rock!".
Although dethroned by 'The Electric State' as Netflix's priciest movie, the star-studded 'Red Notice' has cemented its place in audiences' hearts. Divisive yet compelling, the streaming giant has confirmed that both a sequel and a possible prequel are in the pipeline, ready to be shot consecutively.
Helmer Rawson Marshall Thurber is set to steer the upcoming thrillers, with the trio of renowned actors reprising their roles.
