Manchester United are poised to make a move for goalkeeper John Victor, a decision that comes at an opportune moment following Andre Onana's hamstring injury. The Red Devils' first-choice keeper will now miss their pre-season tour of the US and may not be available for the start of the season.
Utd have been considering signing a new goalkeeper this summer due to Onana's inconsistent performances and doubts surrounding back-up option Altay Bayindir. However, with Onana's recent injury, the need for a new shot-stopper has become more pressing.
United anticipate that Onana will be sidelined for six to eight weeks, putting his availability for the opening Premier League match against Arsenal on August 17 in jeopardy. The Cameroon international is set to join the club's pre-season tour of the United States, but will not participate in any matches.
Utd have already been linked with several goalkeepers this summer, including Aston Villa's Emi Martinez, Porto's Diogo Costa, and Cruz Azul's Kevin Mier.
However, Botafogo's John Victor has emerged as a potential target who wouldn't command as hefty a transfer fee. Reports from Brazil state that United are prepared to make their move for the goalkeeper and have informed Botafogo of their willingness to meet the player's £6million release clause.
Victor, who played a key role for the Brazilian side at the Club World Cup, has reportedly been the subject of an enquiry and several meetings. It appears that Utd are now ready to put forward an offer for the 29-year-old.
Last year, Victor's agent Pedro Gutierrez revealed the burgeoning interest in his client from European clubs. He disclosed: "I have had many phone calls from clubs in Europe enquiring about John and that is no surprise after what he has achieved with Botafogo.
"There has been interest from clubs in England, Germany, Portugal and elsewhere, but John would prefer to play in the best league in the world - the Premier League. Liverpool and Manchester City both have Brazilian goalkeepers in Alisson and Ederson and they have both been successful in England.
"John would like the opportunity to emulate those two and become the latest Brazilian goalkeeper to showcase his talents in the Premier League."
Meanwhile, Utd are gearing up for their pre-season fixtures, kicking off on July 19 against Leeds United in Sweden. The club will then take on West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton during their tour in the US.
