A current Premier League star has explained why he decided to reject a move to Arsenal despite being very close to joining the Gunners. Emi Buendia was a hot property during his time at Norwich City, playing an influential role in two Premier League promotions. He was one of the few Norwich players with genuine quality when the Canaries were struggling to mix it with England's elite.
Buendia was far too good for the Championship during his final season at Carrow Road, scoring 15 goals and laying on another 16 assists. His form attracted no shortage of interest and it became clear that he was going to leave at the end of the campaign. Arsenal were among the clubs linked with Buendia and the Gunners tried hard to bring him to the Emirates Stadium.

They were unable to seal the deal, though, with Aston Villa swooping in to land the winger for a transfer fee of around £33million. He has made 97 appearances since moving to Villa Park but spent the second half of last season on loan at Bayer Leverkusen.
In a recent interview with , the Argentina international was quizzed on why he chose to turn down Arsenal in spite of their advances.
"I was close," he admitted. "It was there, but in these things I like to be involved but not completely, as I like my space. I think the reason why I chose Aston Villa was to feel like an important player in an important project.
"The club today shows what they were planning even before they signed me. For me, it was a crucial moment in my career. During my time at the club, until we found Unai Emery, they tried with other coaches and the results didn't come.
"The club believed it could achieve Europe and Aston Villa is now showing their level. I really loved it the whole time. I felt good and part of the team. I had moments when I played more or less, but this is football."
Buendia has recently been linked with newly-promoted Leeds United, who are said to be keen on snapping him up. A move to Elland Road would see him reunite with Daniel Farke, the manager he thrived under during his time at Norwich.
"One of the most important coaches in my career," added Buendia. "He gave me the chance to join the club, of course. For me, the most important thing he gave me as a player, he gave me the confidence to be myself, to enjoy, to feel free on the pitch."
