Guinness is a required taste that is very bitter for some people; however, it stands apart from other beers for its unique creamy texture and notes of coffee and chocolate. Unlike other beers, where you can add lemonade to make a sweet and delicious shandy, Guinness needs either a milky or fruity addition to taste better than any other beer cocktail.
My family have been making Guinness punch for generations, and other than rum punch or a pina colada, it is known as a Caribbean classic. By adding two simple ingredients, the beer will be more creamy and flavoursome than Baileys and Amarula. This drink is a guaranteed party pleaser and enjoyed by those who love the combination of something bitter, sweet and a little bit spicy.
- Two cans of Guinness (538ml per can)
- One can (397g) of condensed milk
- One and a half teaspoons of nutmeg
Optional but recommended:
- One teaspoon of cinnamon (I would then only use one teaspoon of nutmeg)
- Four capfuls of Brandy (for those who want an extra kick of alcohol)
- Whipped cream (for decoration)
Other recipes include:
- Vanilla extract
- All spice

For a 1.7-litre jug, pour two cans (538ml per can) of Guinness into a mixing bowl. Next, crack open the condensed milk and pour out the milk.
I urge you to scrape out all of the contents with the spoon. You need as much sweetness and creaminess as possible to balance out the bitter beer taste. If you want it sweeter, you will need another tin.
Stir thoroughly until the mixture turns a beige colour, similar to Baileys. Next, add the nutmeg and stir thoroughly; you don't want the spice to start clumping together.
Your mixture should be perfect like that, but I always add some sweet cinnamon for an extra layer of flavour and spice. Mix well again as you need all the ingredients to blend.
My family loves a strong drink, so my mum always adds some brandy for an extra kick, but this is not necessary. Alternatively, other Caribbean recipes incorporate vanilla extract into the drink.
Pour the mixture into a jug and share it with friends and family. This drink is best served with ice and whipped cream.
