Good Morning Britain issued a major update on US President Donald Trump's latest move in a bid to try and put an end to the Russia-Ukraine war on Thursday. It comes as Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Russia now seems to be more inclined toward a ceasefire.
The show's chief correspondent, Richard Gaisford, issued the major update as he explained that Zelensky shared a call with President Trump, Sir Keir Starmer and other European leaders last night. The meeting followed a White House official saying that Trump could meet with Vladimir Putin face to face "as early as next week", to try and bring an end to the war in Ukraine. The GMB presenter explained that the United States special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, had gone to Moscow to meet with Putin as Trump claimed that the talks were "productive", but the newsreader pointed out that "no real details had been released".
"Whatever was said, the President, who has struggled to fulfill his own promise of ending the war, said great progress had been made," explained Richard.
The ITV show then cut to a clip of Trump speaking at the Oval Office after the meeting, where he said: "There have been very good talks with President Putin today, and there's a very good chance that we could be ending the round, ending the end of that road.
"That road is long and continues to be long, but there's a good chance that there will be a meeting very soon."
Richard then continued: "Trump also went on to say that it may not be the breakthrough he is hoping for. The pair first met back in 2018, and Trump talks of friendships and understandings with Putin.
"This, though, would be the first meeting with the two since Trump came into the White House for a second time. Although they have shared a number of phone calls."
However, fans watching at home did not seem to have much faith in the US President's attempts to make peace. Posting on X/Twitter, one viewer said, "Putin doesn't care what Trump says."
Another wrote: "Until NATO removes its 26 bio-chemical weapons factories away from Russian borders and adheres to the Border Security Agreement & Zelensky stops killing ethnic Russians living in Ukraine & stops breaking agreements, this won't end."
While a third commented: "After this length of time, I wouldn't hold my breath. [eyeroll emoji] But we should NOT be sending money and arms to the Ukraine and we SHOULD be returning the 300,000 of their people that are here."
