Labour foreign secretary David Lammy was left squirming live on Sky News during a tense grilling by interviewer Wilfred Frost. Lammy was confronted over the UK's arms deals with Israel, with Frost questioning whether there is a "blanket ban" on selling arms to the country while it is at war with Hamas in Gaza.
Frost said: "Any possible export license that relates to a weapon... have been suspended?" Lammy confirmed: "They are not going. That took place back in September." Frost acknowledged: "So it's almost like we underreported that back at the time. I just want to roll back to your prior answer because I think you listed, in terms of potential further actions, you said a blanket weapons ban. Earlier in our interview you suggested in fact that's already in place, can you just clarify-"
Lammy interrupted to say: "No I didn't list a blanket weapons ban."
"You didn't?" Frost asked, as he confirmed: "No."
"So that is essentially already in place?" he was questioned, and was left squirming as he stuttered: "At- at this time we are not sending weapons that could be used for use in Gaza.
"There is an exception - that is for the F35 supply pool, common supply pool across the global community. So there is no blanket arms embargo because for that reason we don't want to bring down planes that are used to keep British people safe and Europeans safe and others who have the F35.
"That is an exception on this occasion which has been that there is not a blanket arms embargo against Israel, but there is in terms of direct sales that could be used in Israel, of any arms of weapons, and indeed any F35s that are sold directly to Israel. But we are not, in terms of the global supply pool and the kit that we put into that global supply pool, for F35s."
