
If you've ever used a wooden cutting board to chop or onions, you know how difficult it can be to get the smell out. Many will know that you shouldn't put a in the dishwasher, but how can you get rid of the odours from ? After you wash it with soap and water, it can sometimes still smell pungent.
To combat this scent, you should rub lemon halves on it, before rinsing it and drying it fully, chef Michael, known to his 1.2 million followers as @stoveandgarden said. This will get it "smelling fresh", he advised.
Wooden chopping boards should never be submerged in hot water as this can create cracks on the board which are "ideal for bacteria to grow in", home and kitchenware brand Joseph and Joseph advised. It added: "It also ruins the smooth surfaces of the board, and it unfortunately can't be returned to its former glory."
Instead, you should wipe off any food then wash the board by hand with warm water and soap.
Kitchenware brand Robert Welch recommended drying your wooden chopping board immediately. It also suggested treating it with a suitable food-safe oil on a regular basis to maintain the condition - but make sure to wipe off any excess oil before using it.
Another of Michael's kitchen hacks involves using rubber bands placed around the lid of a jar to help you get a better grip when struggling to open it.
Anyone who uses honey regularly in cooking or baking knows how tricky it is to get it all off a spoon. Michael said he adds a small amount of cooking oil to his finger before rubbing it on the spoon and adding the honey - which stops it sticking.
For easy peeled garlic, without getting the scent all over your fingers, you should roughly crush a bulb with your fist (or a glass) and place it into a cup or jar with a lid before shaking. When you tip the garlic out, the outer layer will have been peeled off.
When zesting a lemon, you should always use shorter strokes and make sure to continue turning the fruit, as this will stop bitterness. You can also use a zester or grater to mince garlic, without having to use a garlic press that takes up more cupboard space and can be tricky to clean.
