The Celebrity Traitors star Stephen Fry kicked off his romance with his husband Elliott Spencer with an immediate spark when they crossed paths back in 2012. Looking back on their initial meeting, Fry revealed on The Jonathan Ross Show in 2015: "We met at a friend's house and I knew pretty much straight away that this was someone I wanted to spend, what I considered, the rest of my life with." Despite his conviction, Fry jokingly confessed he wasn't certain if Spencer shared the sentiment, making light of their substantial age difference: "Whether he thought the same because he's got rather a lot more [life to go than me]," he quipped.
The pair exchanged vows on January 17, 2015, three years after their initial encounter and merely two weeks following their engagement. Their nuptials were a private ceremony, taking place at a modest registry office in Norfolk, near where Fry was raised. The Doctor Who icon announcing the momentous occasion on X/Twitter, and posted: "Gosh. @ElliottGSpencer and I go into a room as two people, sign a book and leave as one. Amazing," alongside a touching photograph of the newlyweds signing their marriage licence.
Here's a detailed glimpse at Elliott Spencer and his extraordinary partnership with the cherished actor. Elliott Spencer, born in 1987, is considerably younger than his partner Stephen, who marked his 67th birthday in August 2024.
The duo, recognised for their wit and candidness, regularly acknowledge their almost 30-year age gap in public.
The Jeopardy host playfully remarks on their age gap in interviews, saying on The Jonathan Ross Show: "There is an age difference and I keep forgetting which way round it is but I think he's younger than me... but I don't mind."
During the 2015 BAFTAs, which Fry himself presented, Spencer displayed a carefree stance towards public scrutiny of their romance, underlining his profound love for Stephen. He declared firmly: "I don't care what people think, Stephen is the love of my life, the light of my life."
Stephen got down on one knee during an intimate evening meal at a restaurant in London. Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show, the Alice in Wonderland star confessed he felt certain Spencer would accept but worried his meticulously orchestrated proposal could go disastrously wrong.
"I kind of knew that he'd say yes, we had kind of danced around the subject [of marriage] and I bought a ring and waited for him to pop off to the loo and put the ring on the prongs of a fork so that he would see it as he started to eat. I thought it would be charming," Fry explained.
Yet the romantic gesture didn't unfold quite as seamlessly as he'd envisaged as he refleced: "Of course, he came back and he started chatting and he started playing with the fork and I thought, 'For God's sake look at the fork' - you don't really ever look at forks do you - and I thought, 'He's going to pick it up and the ring is going to fly off into that lady's soup...'"
Luckily, Spencer spotted the ring just in time, transforming the proposal into the touching moment Fry had hoped for. Looking back, Fry described it as a "very teary and splendid moment."
Building a FamilyDuring a chat with the Mirror, the broadcasting legend revealed his desire to build a family with his husband and admitted that one of his greatest regrets was not becoming a father.
The Blackadder star opened up about the void this has created in his existence and shared: "I have many godchildren now, nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews, but I'll never experience a child growing up. It's a slight sadness.
"I mean, that's probably the biggest hole in my life experience."
Fry also disclosed that he and Spencer had contemplated parenthood together but hadn't taken concrete steps.
"Elliott and I, we talked about it a bit, but we never talked about it to the extent of 'Right, so, we're going to a clinic tomorrow to talk this through to some expert,'" he explained.
"We never quite got that far. It was always 'Yeah, it would be nice, wouldn't it?'"
Elliott Spencer is a versatile creative talent who has forged careers as a comedian, writer, and photographer.
In 2015, Spencer revealed that his priorities at that point centred on his marriage and his love of photography. "I'm just really happy and enjoying being married. It's all been really exciting and new. I'm not really doing anything else.
"I'm focusing on photography now rather than comedy, and being creative. I'm hoping to hold an exhibition so Stephen and all our friends can see my work."
The duo is passionate about travelling and has explored numerous thrilling destinations together. In 2017, Spencer posted a snap of the two of them discovering the Grand Canyon.
Stephen and Elliot also enjoy holidays with their celebrity pals. In 2014, Spencer uploaded a photograph of himself and Fry alongside actress Emma Thompson at a restaurant in Florence.
The television personality and national treasure, who had an operation to remove his prostate after a prostate cancer diagnosis, praised his husband for providing unwavering support throughout his diagnosis and care.
Medical professionals had assigned Fry a Gleason Score of 9 out of 10, signalling a particularly aggressive type of cancer.
During a 2018 video, Fry revealed specifics about his experience, outlining the seriousness of his situation with his trademark humour as he revealed: "This was quite an aggressive little bugger.
"As far as we know, it's all been got... I won't know for sure until my PSA levels are checked. They should be 0 now because I have no prostate. But if there is anything left on the bed of the prostate, then I'll need radiotherapy and the whole damn process will start again."
Fry also conveyed deep appreciation for the steadfast support he received during his cancer ordeal and added: "My family and my divine, darling husband were just marvellous. And those friends who have known have been very kind about it.
"I'm lucky to be surrounded by such wonderful people. Lucky to have such an incredible team working for me. And lucky to have an immune system working for me," he said.
