Barclays has set out the rules for customers using Apple Wallet after a question came in about the security measures for the service. Apple device users can use the Wallet app to add their credit and debit cards to make payments through their device, including through an iPhone or Apple Watch.
A Barclays customer contacted the bank as they had added their bank card through Apple Wallet but they were concerned that it had not asked for a verification method, such as with a text or phone call.
The worried customer asked: "Normally it would ask. Is this really secure?" Barclays responded to assure that adding your bank card through Apple Wallet "is secure".
The bank also explained the options for how you can add your card through the app: "There are two ways you can do it, directly through the app or by adding your details to the wallet manually."
But the customer responded to ask again why it was not asking for a verification method in their case. They explained their concerns: "If someone obtained my card they could just add my card without any verification."
Barclays replied with a potential reason why this may be happening. The bank said: "There are many factors that are taken into consideration when adding a card to your device, such as if you've previously had the card linked to the device then it would recognise you and pass the verification stage."
If you want to add your card to Apple Wallet, you can do so through the Barclays app, by opening 'Your cards' on the home page, selecting the card you want to add, then choosing 'Add to Apple Wallet' and following the other steps.
You can also add your bank card through your iPhone, by opening the Wallet app and selecting the option to add a new card, then following the guide.
With an iPad or Mac, you will need to open Settings and then select 'Wallet & Apple Pay'. To add your card through your Apple Watch, you will need to use your paired iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, and in the My Watch tab, select 'Wallet & Apple Pay' and then add a new card.
Once you have your card added to your Apple Wallet, you will be able to use Apple Pay to make purchases, including online and in apps.
You can do this when you see Apple Pay as a payment option. To do so, tap the Apple Pay button or choose Apple Pay as your payment method.
Then enter your any billing, delivery and contact information that is needed. Go through the steps on the screen to confirm the payment on your Apple device.
Once your payment is successful, you will see 'Done' and a tick on the screen to confirm the amount has gone through.
Customers can also view all the payments they have made using Apple Pay by checking their account history in the Barclays app or in Online Banking.
You can also view your last 10 Apple Pay payments, including details about the seller or shop, under 'Transaction history' in the Wallet app.
