Arsenal could save millions with backdoor route to Jamie Gittens transfer

could be one of several teams looking to secure the signature of Jamie Gittens this summer, after an impressive campaign with Borussia Dortmund. The winger, who doesn't turn 21 until August, has registered 17 goals across all competitions this season, leaving top clubs across the continent on red alert.

A product of the Chelsea and Manchester City academies, Gittens moved to Dortmund in 2020 and broke through into the senior set-up two years later. He was part of the squad that reached the Champions League final last season, but a failure to qualify for the competition this time around could spell the end of his time in Germany.

That's in part down to the fact Gittens, who is under contract until 2028, might push for a move to join a Champions League outfit, should Dortmund finish outside the Bundesliga's top four. Unlike last season, Germany's top flight won't benefit from the extra Champions League spot for fifth place - something Dortmund were the beneficiaries of.

However, there's every chance Gittens' departure could be initiated by the club itself, given the impact it would have on their budget for the season. It's 10 years since the Black-Yellows last missed out on Champions League revenue, meaning it could have potentially devastating consequences.

It was reported earlier in the season that failure to qualify for European football altogether would cost them around £25million, and while they do at least look likely to qualify for some kind of continental competition, it's the Champions League where the big bucks are. Then there's the impact it may have on sponsorship deals, as contracts with both front-of-shirt sponsors, Evonik and 1&1, are due to expire in the summer.

It comes after claims that , with Ruhr Nachrichten, revealing the north London outfit are in the mix to sign him. What's more, it's suggested by the outlet that Gittens is open to leaving Dortmund in the summer, should a suitable offer come his way.

How cheap Arsenal - or whoever manages to sign him - can land a deal for could depend on Dortmund's final two games of the season. They trail fourth-placed Freiburg by one point, with matches against Bayer Leverkusen and Holstein Kiel to come.
