The Winter Session of Parliament is a crucial period in India’s legislative calendar, typically characterized by the discussion and passage of significant bills and policies. Scheduled from November 25 to December 20, 2024, this session holds particular importance as it coincides with Constitution Day on November 26, marking the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution. With key legislative matters on the agenda and potential implications from recent assembly elections, the Winter Session serves as a platform for shaping the country’s governance and addressing pressing national issues.
The Winter Session of Parliament is announced by Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju. This session is particularly significant as it includes November 26, which is celebrated as Constitution Day. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution's adoption. The Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution in 1949, and it officially came into effect on January 26, 1950. While November 26 was previously recognized as National Law Day, the Modi government declared it Constitution Day in 2015, coinciding with the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
During the session, Parliament will have 21 sittings, focusing on key legislation and possibly reflecting the outcomes of recent assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand.
Among the important items on the agenda is the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which will be discussed following recommendations from the joint parliamentary committee. Additionally, the government is expected to update Parliament on the progress of disengagement efforts between India and China in eastern Ladakh.
A victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming elections could bolster their ability to advance their legislative agenda, especially after their recent success in Haryana. Conversely, if the BJP were to lose, it might encourage opposition parties to push discussions on issues they prioritize.
