Mumbai: Nearly 50 female students from the Puranmal Lahoti Government Polytechnic hostel in Maharashtra's Latur city were hospitalised on Saturday night due to suspected food poisoning after dinner. The hostel accommodates 324 female students, and around 7 pm, the students had a meal consisting of rice, chapattis, okra curry, and lentil soup, according to officials.
By 8:30 pm, several students began feeling nauseous, with some starting to vomit. Upon learning of the situation, the college principal immediately contacted Dr. Uday Mohite, dean of the Vilasrao Deshmukh Government Medical College and Hospital, and ambulances were arranged to transport the affected students to the hospital. By midnight, nearly 50 students were admitted for treatment, with 20 being discharged by 3 am on Sunday. The remaining 30 students continued to receive care, though none were in critical condition. Dr. Mohite assured the media that all the students were stable and receiving necessary treatment, including saline where required.
The college principal, VD Nitnaware, also reassured the students' parents, stating that the situation was under control and thorough health checks were being conducted to prevent any further incidents. The Shivajinagar police were informed, and food samples were collected to determine the cause of the suspected food poisoning. Results are awaited to confirm the source. Following the incident, Latur's Lok Sabha MP, Shivaji Kalge, visited the hospital to check on the students' well-being and called on Latur Collector Varsha Thakur Ghuge to take necessary action against those responsible.
