Rishabh Pant made history in the Leeds Test against England by scoring centuries in both innings, a rare and commendable achievement. However, amidst the celebration, he also attracted disciplinary action for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct.
What Was Pant’s Mistake? On the third day of the Test, during the 61st over of England’s first innings, Pant was visibly frustrated when the on-field umpires refused to change the ball despite checking its condition. In protest, Pant threw the ball on the ground in front of the umpire, an act deemed disrespectful.
ICC's Action-
Offense: Pant was found guilty of Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct, under Article 2.8, which deals with "showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match."
-
Penalty:
-
Reprimand issued (official warning)
-
1 demerit point added to his disciplinary record
-
This is Pant’s first demerit point within a 24-month period, so it doesn't trigger any suspension or match fee deduction.
Pant Accepted His Mistake-
Pant admitted the offense to Match Referee Richie Richardson, avoiding the need for a formal hearing.
-
The report was filed by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, along with third umpire Sharfuddoula and fourth umpire Mike Burns.
For a Level 1 offense, punishments can range from:
-
Reprimand (minimum)
-
Up to 50% match fee deduction
-
1 or 2 demerit points
Fortunately for Pant, since this was a first-time minor offense and he accepted responsibility, he got the lightest possible penalty.
The Bigger PicturePant’s double century effort was a standout in the Leeds Test and has added to his stature as a reliable Test player. However, this incident serves as a reminder about maintaining composure and discipline, especially during high-stakes matches.
