Chernobyl Disaster: The tragedy that happened at Ukraine's Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was so horrific that even today no one lives there for hundreds of kilometers, but in a recent study, frogs were found roaming around there happily.
Chernobyl Case Study: It has been almost 30 years since the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine and even today there is an effect of dangerous radiation here. Due to this, even today the area far and wide from this place is deserted. However, experts keep coming here for research and keep making new discoveries. In one such research, researchers have found that frogs have been found around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
256 male frogs found
According to the study published in Biology Letters, 'The explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant caused the release of radioactive material into the environment on a large scale. This had serious consequences for both humans and wildlife. But it is not yet clear whether the current level of radiation has the potential to shape the ecology and development of wild populations.'
The researchers collected 256 male frogs from ponds in the area from 2016-2018. They also studied the age of the frogs, the levels of a stress hormone called corticosterone, and the length of their telomeres.
The health of the frogs was also good.
The team also looked at how much radiation the frogs had absorbed. They studied 197 frogs in detail, so that their age could be estimated most accurately. It was found that there was no significant relationship between the absorbed radiation and their health indicators. That is, the health of the frogs was also quite good.
Let us tell you that in the early morning of 26 April 1986, a massive explosion took place in the Chernobyl nuclear plant, in which 31 people died directly. But between 1991 and 2015, 20 thousand cases of thyroid cancer were registered. Most of these patients were under 18 years of age. Apart from this, many more cases of cancer have also come to light. It is called the world's worst nuclear accident because even after so many years of the accident, scientists have not been able to find the answer to the question that when will the effect of radiation end from here.
