While baby names often ebb and flow in popularity, recent years have marked a distinct shift away from some contemporary or trend-led choices. Baby name fashions wax and wane, with modern and retro selections frequently fluctuating in favour.
As ageless classics make a comeback, it seems other once-fashionable baby names are subtly falling out of vogue. This is according to the life insurance team at who scrutinised name trends from 2013 to 2023 using data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to reveal the UK's most dwindling names.
The research indicates that some formerly popular baby names are now swiftly losing their appeal. For boys, Leland has experienced the sharpest drop, plummeting by 96%, followed by Tyler-James at 95% and Patryk at 92%.

Among girls, Alexa has seen the greatest decrease, down by 97%, possibly due to its link with Kaitlin is hot on its heels, having dropped by more than 96%.
In terms of traditional , Maeve, has witnessed a remarkable 1,854% surge in usage. Of Irish origin, Maeve leapt from 57 babies named Maeve in 2013 to a whopping 1,114 in 2023, reports .
It was closely trailed by the similar name Margot, which enjoyed a 1,764% rise. Ezra and Nellie rank third, having increased by 791% and 1,084% respectively.
The name Atlas, of Greek origin and mythological significance, has seen a staggering increase of 1,775% – from just 12 boys named Atlas in 2013 to 225 in 2023. Chester follows closely with an 856% surge.
