Indian Restaurant in London: Veeraswamy, one of Britain's oldest and most famous Indian restaurants, is embroiled in a legal battle over lease extension, putting it at risk of losing the premises in the famous Regent Street area of central London, where it has been serving its customers their favourite food for almost 100 years.

This restaurant was established in 1926

Veeraswamy is a Michelin-star restaurant, which was established in April 1926 in the Victory House building. However, The Crown State, which owns Victory House, is going to carry out large-scale repair, decoration and renovation work in the building, due to which it has decided not to extend the lease period of the restaurant. Veeraswamy's lease period is going to end in June. MW Eat, the company that owns the restaurant, has approached the court for renewal of the lease under its protected tenancy rights.

Ranjit Mathrani, Director, MW Eats, said, "Veeraswamy is not just an establishment but a vibrant place that is an integral part of London's current culinary landscape. The late Queen of Britain (Elizabeth II), Princess Anne and other foreign royal personalities have visited our restaurant."

Refusal to extend lease period after June 24

He said, "The Crown Estate has refused to extend our lease period beyond June 24 and has asked us to vacate our restaurant premises located on the ground and first floor so that it can carry out renovation work." Mathrani said that MW Eat has presented such options to The Crown Estate, which will allow the restaurant to continue operating from its historic premises. He said, however, the company is not ready for the agreement and is adamant on converting the entire building into an office complex. The MW Eat group has been running Veeraswamy since the 1990s.
