According to sources, the mega auction for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season is expected to take place in Riyadh later this month. All ten franchises have announced their list of retained players for IPL 2025, which is filled with some shocking decisions. Since all the teams have retained the players they feel will be crucial to their success in the upcoming season of the cash-rich league, all eyes are now on the mega auction.
According to sources, the IPL auction will take place in Riyadh, with the dates likely to be November 24 to 25. The retention lists of all the ten franchises for next year's Indian Premier League (IPL) season were finally unveiled last week, with many big players including Jos Buttler, Aiden Markram, Glenn Maxwell, Faf du Plessis, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer and many more allowed to enter the auction by their respective franchises.
The teams retained a total of 46 players and invested a combined total of Rs 558.5 crore. Out of the total 46 players retained by all the franchises, 36 players are Indians. Out of these, 10 players are uncapped Indian stars. With the release of IPL-winning captain Shreyas Iyer from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rishabh Pant from Delhi Capitals (DC) and KL Rahul from Lucknow Super Giants, three top-class Indian captaincy options will be available for the franchises who are looking for a new captain for their team.
Notably, no England player was retained by the franchise this time. Several star players such as Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone, Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Harry Brook, Phil Salt and Will Jacks were let go. These players missed part of their season due to international commitments, while Harry Brook opted out due to personal reasons. England batsman Jason Roy withdrew from the IPL earlier this season due to personal reasons. These developments have at times hurt the balance of the squad, with many teams relying on their overseas talent.
Five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) relied on the Indian core, which included captain Hardik Pandya, former captain Rohit Sharma, pacer Jasprit Bumrah, 360-degree hitter Suryakumar Yadav and young left-hander Tilak Verma. It was expected that youngster Ishan Kishan might retain his place, given his youth and his experience with the franchise, but that did not happen as many would have thought. This retention strategy allowed MI to retain a strong Indian contingent, giving them Rs 45 crore to further strengthen their squad in the auction.
In contrast, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have taken a more selective approach, retaining only three players. Virat Kohli has received the highest retention fee of Rs 21 crore along with Rajat Patidar and Yash Dayal. RCB have the second-highest purse of Rs 83 crore under this strategy.
Punjab Kings have surprised many by choosing not to retain any capped players. Their two retentions, Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh, signal a shift towards promoting young talent. The biggest amount left is Rs 110.5 crore.
Rajasthan Royals have strengthened their batting order to a large extent, retaining a strong lineup but looking for an additional opener. entering the auction with the lowest amount at Rs 41 crore.
For Chennai Super Kings (CSK), MS Dhoni is set to participate in the upcoming season of IPL once again, as he was retained as an uncapped player by the five-time champions. CSK's strategy is likely to focus on mixing experienced players with new talent to maintain the balance that has driven their past successes. Apart from Dhoni, their retained players include Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja and Mathisha Pathirana.
