Susegad is Goa's tourism USP and there's no denying it

The internet was taken by storm during the last few days following the tragic death of a young Pune-based chartered accountant, Anna Sebastian Perayil (26), due to work overload and stress, at a well reputed firm.

Her mother, Anita Augustine, wrote an email to the company’s chairman unfolding the incidents which led to her daughter’s untimely death, demanding that the company focus on the staff’s mental health and well-being.

Beyond food, an interesting culinary story in Goa

Extreme workload, tight deadlines, lack of sleep, improper nutrition can lead to health issues, including hypertension, heart conditions, depression and various others. Anna was probably experiencing all of these for which she finally paid with her life.

In Goa's susegad way of life, one could probably find a remedy for what Anna went through. The susegad lifestyle implores upon all those facing stressful lives to relax and unwind to recharge their batteries.

People are now realising the importance of embracing susegad, but there was a time when Goans were proclaimed, or rather misconstrued, as lazy. At times, susegad was unfairly portrayed by the Bollywood film industry.

In a world where we see people finding pride in being busy and see it as a sign of progress, Goans, despite their busy schedule, find time for their afternoon naps (siesta) which help them balance work and life.

Recent article in the Harvard Business Review states that one method of relaxation is to detach from work psychologically and invest the time in other activities, practicing mindfulness.

One reason why so many tourists come to Goa on weekends is to find that detachment from the grind and the toxic work environment. It is here that they find their wellness and goodness in the hospitable arms of Goa.

It would be the right time for the State to promote itself as a wellness destination providing stress-relieving events under certified wellness coaches.

Wellness centres with certified yoga instructors can lead regular sessions to teach visitors various techniques and methods for stress relief. This initiative can position Goa as a destination not only for beach weddings and parties, but also as a hub for health-conscious living.

Long weekend classes which teach meditation and healing retreats are another way to enhance the experience of tourists seeking natural and holistic health solutions. Why not promote Goa as the destination that can change a person’s outlook towards life?

Goa has medicinal waters, too

Ayurvedic therapies have become increasingly popular with travellers in search of natural and comprehensive wellness remedies. This could potentially evolve into another avenue for exploration and development. Nonetheless, Goa remains a destination where individuals come to retreat from the challenges of everyday life and relax in the midst of natural surroundings.

Has Goa forgotten the great F N Souza?

At the end of the day, one has to focus on what you can control and eliminate what is not possible. Focusing on a healthy work-life balance is about being happy and to treat yourself with what you deserve. Work-life balance is not what you are given, but what you must create to lead a healthier lifestyle.

In a place where you work, your boss may hold the answer to your professional aspirations, but not your sanity. Ultimately, a healthier lifestyle is within your reach, and in Goa you can tick all the right boxes to hit the road to wellness.
