'Stories of Goa' is an art exhibition that takes visitors on a nostalgic journey through the eyes of the artist, Marcio Menino Fernandes. Growing up in the idyllic village of Merces, in North Goa, Marcio's deep connection with the land and culture of Goa is evident in his works.
The exhibition, which opened on April 21, 2025 at Sadhana Dell ‘Arte gallery in Merces, brings forth a collection of cherished memories from his childhood, and features vibrant depictions of Goa’s unique essence.
In his art, Marcio explores local religious practices, festivals, familiar animals, and the daily encounters that shaped his life.
From the sacred roadside crosses to the ubiquitous presence of crows, coconut trees swaying in the wind, and the ever-friendly street dogs of rural Goa, Marcio’s paintings serve as a powerful reminder of a time and way of life that is fading.
Through his work, Marcio seeks to safeguard and preserve the essence of these elements, which he fears may soon be lost.

In Marcio's words, “Through this exhibition, I express my deep love for the land that nurtured me and filled my life with countless wonderful moments."
"I intend to use this platform as a means to try and safeguard and highlight a few elements that I fear are at risk of diminishing,” he shares.
His art stands as both a tribute to Goa and a preservation of the cultural heritage that defines it.
FROM THE CURATOR’S PERSPECTIVE
The exhibition has been curated by Lina Vincent, who reflects on Marcio’s emotional connection to his homeland. She says, “Distance makes the heart grow fonder.”
"While Marcio has always drawn inspiration from his surroundings, living abroad has intensified his longing for the Goan landscape. Through 'Stories of Goa,' he not only brings to familiar objects, places, and faces, but also creates a contemplative space for viewers," she continues.
The exhibition reflects Marcio’s deep awareness of Goa’s rapid transformation and cultural shifts, and through his art, he aims to conserve and protect what is rapidly changing in Goa, she adds.
