Day 2 of the first Test between England and India at Headingley, Leeds witnessed high-quality cricket from both sides as India wrapped up their first innings at 471 all out, before England responded strongly to reach 209/3 at stumps, trailing by 262 runs.
After electing to bowl first, England were put under pressure by a commanding Indian batting performance. The day began with India continuing from their strong position on Day 1, and they didn’t disappoint.

The star of the innings was Indian captain Shubman Gill, who played a composed yet authoritative knock of 147 runs off 227 deliveries, including 19 boundaries and a six. His leadership with the bat anchored India’s innings and allowed others to bat freely around him.
Vice-captain Rishabh Pant added fireworks to the scorecard with an attacking and entertaining 134 off 178 balls, smashing 12 boundaries and 6 sixes. His aggressive intent pushed India well past the 450-mark before England finally managed to wrap up the tail.
Among England's bowlers, Ben Stokes led by example, claiming 4 wickets for 66 runs in 20 overs, using his experience and discipline to break crucial partnerships. He was ably supported by Josh Tongue, who also finished with 4 wickets for 86 runs, providing important breakthroughs when needed.
England looking in a strong touch
In response, England began their innings with determination. Ben Duckett provided a solid start, scoring 62 runs off 94 balls, featuring 9 boundaries, before being dismissed. The highlight of England's reply was Ollie Pope, who batted with fluency and confidence to remain unbeaten on 100 off 131 balls, guiding the hosts toward a respectable position.
Harry Brook, meanwhile, was watchful and yet to score, ending the day on 0 off 12 deliveries, as England looked to consolidate and build toward India’s first-innings total.
India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers, claiming all three wickets that fell, finishing the day with figures of 3/48 from 13 overs. He consistently troubled the English batters with his accuracy and sharp movement off the pitch.
