When I first heard the Gen Z version of the term ‘Easter Egg’, I couldn’t imagine people were discussing a film, it was hard to believe that there can be talk about ‘Easter’ that had nothing to do with Jesus, the Risen Lord or even Jerusalem – instead they were discussing Stan Lee and his Marvel genius. Let’s face it—when most people think of Easter these days, they picture colourful eggs, chocolate bunnies, and maybe even a giant inflatable rabbit on someone’s lawn. While those things are undeniably fun, Easter is about much more than just candy and cute decorations.
At its heart, Easter is a celebration of divine rebirth, hope, and transformation. It's a time to reflect on deeper meanings, to reconnect with ourselves, and to revive our spiritual lives. So how do we put the “spirit” back in Easter? What can we do in our busy lives to embrace the true essence of Easter – let’s find out!
For someone who is deeply spiritual and religious in his beliefs, celebrity photographer Subi Samuel shared an interesting insight that puts us back into the right perspective to begin with, “Easter is not about seasonal observances; it’s about everlasting redemption. It invites us to focus on ourselves by silencing the distractions and consumerism and gaze at the One who matters most. It reminds us that true peace is not to be found in chocolate or traditions but from the blood-stained cross and an empty grave. This Easter, let’s take a deeper look. Let's focus on turning our attention away from the many distractions and focusing on what matters. Jesus Christ came, died, and resurrected. That impacts everything. This is why Easter is not a holiday, but a statement: He is risen. He is Lord. And He is coming again.”
Taking a leaf from Samuel’s understanding let us use Easter as a chance to forgive, to let go of old hurts, and to recommit to personal growth and kindness. But first accept that spiritualism doesn’t have to mean being serious all the time. It can be, and most of the time is, about connection, meaning, and being present. So bring back or create meaningful family traditions. That might be attending a sunrise service, lighting a candle for loved ones, writing letters of forgiveness or gratitude, or even just sitting together in silence for a few minutes. Consider Easter like a spiritual spring cleaning—making space within one’s self for what truly matters.
Dr Avinash Desouza, consultant psychiatrist further suggested, “The Spiritual meaning of Easter means the re-coming and returning of things just like Jesus rose from the dead in 3 days. If people wish, they can change and reform and transform themselves in the same way. It is a time to change lifestyle, shed old thought patterns, and embrace new ones. One could give up vices like smoking, alcohol and gambling. One could start a new healthier routine and also work towards the renewal of relationships and friendships that have been lost to time. Renewal and resurgence of good traits and shedding the bad ones is the way for Spiritual Awakening in Easter. Focus on the family and people you love with renewed love and a new found vigour.”
Taking a cue from the good doctor, let’s ensure from this moment on, Easter is more than a date on the calendar—it’s an opportunity to pause, reset, and reconnect with our hearts, our kin and our neighbours, and the deeper rhythms of life. By blending tradition, intention, and a little bit of creative fun, we can bring back the spiritual sparkle that makes Easter truly special. Nothing says “spiritual Easter” better than helping someone else. Deliver flowers to a neighbour, donate to a local shelter, or invite someone who’s alone on Easter day. Acts of kindness are contagious, and they bring Easter’s message to life in a way that even the best chocolate egg can’t.
Like Subi pointed out, “Easter, unlike other holidays, is an annual event dedicated to commemorating the greatest sacrifice ever offered by any human being as well as the most pivotal point in Christianity.” But, you don’t have to ditch the fun to be spiritual. Hide “spiritual eggs” alongside the candy ones—with positive quotes, simple prayers, or kind challenges inside. Dance around the kitchen to uplifting music. Celebrate both joy and meaning. Who says you can’t talk about resurrection, reconciliation and The Risen Lord while wearing bunny ears?
