The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued detailed weather alerts covering multiple regions across India for the week of May 18 to 24, 2025. The forecast predicts contrasting weather patterns, with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms impacting the southern and northeastern states, while severe heatwaves continue to affect northern and central India.

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in Southern and Northeastern statesThere will likely be thunderstorms and strong winds along with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across southern India, which includes Karnataka, Kerala, Goa, and portions of Andhra Pradesh. Karnataka is still under a yellow alert for ongoing rains that could result in waterlogging, traffic jams, and localised flooding, particularly in Bengaluru and 23 other districts. Residents and officials are advised by the IMD to be ready for any difficulties that may result from the continuous rains.

Similarly, northeastern states such as Assam, Meghalaya, and Sikkim are also under alert for widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated instances of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning. These conditions raise concerns about the possibility of landslides in hilly areas and disruptions to transport and communication. Residents are urged to exercise caution and stay updated with local weather advisories.

Heatwave conditions to continue in Northern and Central IndiaIndia's central and northern regions are experiencing extreme scorching conditions, while other sections of the country are seeing significant rainfall. Temperatures have risen beyond 45°C in several Uttar Pradesh cities, including Banda, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Jhansi, and Varanasi. Banda recorded the maximum temperature at 46.2°C. Sriganganagar, Rajasthan, also saw intense heat, with temperatures reaching 46°C.

Particularly for susceptible groups like children, the elderly, and outdoor labourers, these extreme heatwaves present serious health hazards like heatstroke. The IMD has issued warnings urging people to take necessary precautions—such as staying hydrated, avoiding exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours, and seeking medical help if symptoms of heat-related illnesses appear.

Precautions and tips to considerGiven the extreme weather variability, residents and travelers are strongly advised to stay vigilant. Those in rain-affected regions should be prepared for potential flooding, waterlogging, and travel delays. It is advisable to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain periods and ensure safety measures are in place, particularly in flood-prone areas.

On the other hand, increasing hydration intake and avoiding midday outdoor activities can help lower health risks in heatwave zones. Adequate rest periods and hydration for outdoor workers should be provided by employers and local government agencies.

For the latest updates and safety instructions, it's encouraged that one checks the official IMD website and follows announcements from local meteorological offices regularly.
